چکیده

Hans Kruse and William T. Pinkston Department of Physics, Vanderbilt Uniuersity, Nashuille, Tennessee 37235 (Received 23 February 1979) Within an extended semiquantal theory we perform large-sized coupled-channel calculations involving 260 collectiue .levels for Coulomb fission of 238U. Differential Coulomb fission cross sections are studied as a function of bombarding energy and impact Parameter for several projectiles. In the Xe + U case, total cross sections are also given. We find a strong dependence on projectile charge number, fCF(18q (Zp)6 in the region 50 52, 92 for a fixed ratio E/Ecod, which might be helpful to separate Coulomb fission experimentallyfrom sequential fission following transfer reactions. Since the cross sections are sensitive to the moment of inertia O at the saddle point, Coulomb fission can serve as a tool to investigate the dependence of O on elongation. The fragment angular distribution exhiblts deviations from l/sinOf which are pronounced at low incident energies. Our theory indicates that the recently measured Xe + U fission cross sections contain a major fraction of Coulomb-induced fission at E 5 0.85 E„„.

A genetic algorithm-based approach for numerical solution of droplet status after Coulomb fission using the energy

As a droplet moves, due to evaporation at the surface, the droplet size is gradually reduced. Due to decreasing the size of the droplets moving in the spray core, the surface charges become closer and the repulsive force between the charges increases. When the Coulombic force overcomes the surface tension force (Rayleigh instability) the droplet breaks into smaller droplets (Coulomb fission). T...

We compute the final kinetic energies of the fragments emitted in the light charged particle accompanied cold fission of 252 Cf taking into account the deformation and the finite-size effects of the fragments and integrating the equations of motion for a three-body system subjected only to Coulomb forces. The initial conditions for the trajectory calculations were derived in the frame of a defo...

Coulomb- and antiferromagnetic-induced fission in doubly charged cubelike fe-s clusters.

We report the observation of symmetric fission in doubly charged Fe-S cluster anions, [Fe(4)S(4)X(4)](2-)-->2[Fe(2)S(2)X(2)](-) (X=Cl,Br), owing to both Coulomb repulsion and antiferromagnetic coupling. Photoelectron spectroscopy shows that both the parent and the fission fragments have similar electronic structures and confirms the inverted energy schemes due to the strong spin polarization of...

Beyond the Rayleigh instability limit for multicharged finite systems: from fission to Coulomb explosion.

We address the stability of multicharged finite systems driven by Coulomb forces beyond the Rayleigh instability limit. Our exploration of the nuclear dynamics of heavily charged Morse clusters enabled us to vary the range of the pair potential and of the fissibility parameter, which results in distinct fragmentation patterns and in the angular distributions of the fragments. The Rayleigh insta...

Nuclear disintegration induced by virtual photons at heavy-ion colliders

A model of electromagnetic interaction of relativistic heavy ions which makes it possible to calculate the inclusive and exclusive characteristics of such interactions is presented. The multistep model includes (1) the single and double virtual photon absorption by a nucleus, (2) intranuclear cascades of produced hadrons and (3) statistical decay of excited residual nuclei described by evaporat...
